Early childhood programs not only support the children in their care, but help families overcome obstacles and increase engagement with their children. All families experience times of stress, and research demonstrates that children grow and learn best in families who have the supports and skills to deal with those times. Kentucky Strengthening Families is a multi-generational approach which is dedicated to embedding protective factors into services and supports for children and their families. This session will discuss the six protective factors: 1) Parental Resilience; 2) Social Connections: 3) Knowledge of Child Development; 4) Concrete Support in Times of Need; 5) Social and Emotional Competence of Children; and 6) Nurturing and Attachment. We will also discuss how to increase family engagement by having meaningful responsive conversations with families to build connections between home and school.
